Litmus Paper Test:

Acid:- If you dip a blue litmus paper into an acid, it will turn red while a red litmus paper will not change colour.

Base:- Bases turn red litmus paper blue while the blue litmus paper stays blue.

Characteristic of pH scale are

  • (i) For acidic solution, pH < 7
  • (ii) For alkaline solution, pH > 7
  • (iii) For neutral solution, pH = 7

Neutralization

Acids and bases react with one another to yield two products: water, and an ionic compound known as a salt. This kind of reaction is called a neutralization reaction.

Alkali: A base which is soluble in water is called alkali.

Point to Remember: All alkalis are bases, but all bases are not alkalis.
